Melkbelly has a hodge podge and inventive sound. The Chicago quartet, which formed in 2013, have gotten pretty cohesive over the years, allowing them to flex their creative muscles and very varied musical influences. After an EP and a slew of singles and 7"s, the band is finally ready to take on a full-length debut. That LP, Nothing Valley, will be the first release from new label, Wax Nine, which was founded by Speedy Ortiz frontwoman Sadie Dupuis.
"Kid Kreative", the first single from Nothing Valley reflects on the frustrations of navigating a male-dominated music industry, where ideas and aesthetics are hijacked on the daily. “It was a song that I wrote when I was really mad,” explains vocalist Miranda Winters. “It’s about having your aesthetic hijacked by someone else. Specifically, as a woman that plays rock ‘n’ roll, having your aesthetic hijacked by a man and them easily capitalizing on that.”
In the music video, directed by Marty Schousboe, an entitled and highly gluttonous individual stakes claim to all the food in sight, before realizing that he might have bitten off more than he can chew. Watch below.
