Kelton Young is a Nashville native and part-time Virginia resident. The up-and-coming creative is a student at Hampton University and also moonlights as the lo-fi prince Dream Wave.
The following is a collection of Q&As and personal anecdotes about Kelton, along with a music video and photography by the man himself.
How did you get signed? - @marcus.xoxo
Well it's funny, I really wasn't signed to Citrus City. They hit me up about re-releasing my album Missing Home on cassette. I've been releasing music on my own for a while, but I think I'm gonna go the signee route on my next release.
Which one of your songs is your favorite to play? - @sopharela
I think my favorite song to play is probably "Elizabeth". It was the first song I ever recorded, and the chords are mad fun to play live.
What was the most formative part of your childhood, coming from a musical stand point? - @corn.bitch
I think the most formative part of my childhood was probably getting a Stereolab CD and a Björk record when I was like 9 or 10.
I'd listened to a lot of the music that my parents liked, like gospel and soul up to that point, other than some weird stuff that I'd find on NPT, like Philip Glass and Brian Eno and stuff. But getting those two record, Ocillions From the Anti-Sun and Björk's debut made me realize that I really loved music, even if I didn't know how to make it at that point.
When it comes to photography, do you have any favorite subjects?
Though I take a lot of photos of my friends, and shows, and things of that nature, my favorite photography subjects are odd things I see, trips that I take, or weird/funny real-life moments that have happened to me. Like when I was in high school I took this photo of these two girls who were about to fight, and one of my teachers was in the middle getting hit ... It was honestly a pretty sick photo, but sadly the roll got overexposed smh.
You crushing on anyone or anything at the moment? People, bands, artists, etc?
LOL. Yo, I swear I'm always crushing on everyone ... I think my biggest crush right now is Eva Moolchan (a.k.a. Sneaks). She's so talented and also so beautiful.
Are you into astrology? What's your rising sign?
I'm really not an astrology guy, but a girl I dated taught me a good portion about it. And honestly, I think it's pretty cool. I think my rising's Leo!
What has 2017 been like for you so far?
2017 has been tight so far. There have definitely been some dark moments, but overall it's been fun. I've been traveling a lot more, and later this year some very fun things are coming. So I'm excited!
Soulja Boy or Chris Brown?
Soulja Boy for sure. He has a newer song out with Bow Wow that's heat!
Anecdotes On Kelton
@king.coogi: Well! I haven't known Kelton for that long! I've sort of always seen him around or heard about him, but my first time actually meeting him he was the coolest dude I've ever met possibly!
He had this smooth-ass Prince/Rick James vibe like on some Slick Rick type stuff! We've had a few brief convos, but I felt comfy around him! We still aren't super close, but he's one of the most creative and innovative Nashvillians I know and I'm glad he's my friend.
@nicxjiosa: Kelton is genuinely one of the most bright and glowing individuals I've met. People gravitate towards him like no other, and he is such a positive dude, always smiling and having a golden time.
I'm pretty sure Kelton once told me he prefers to be alone. But I think he likes making his friends happy more than he likes to make himself happy. So he always makes himself available to be there for people he cares about. I think that says a lot about a person.
